When it comes to IWC’s current line-up, you would be hard pressed to find a more classic, iconic design than the time-only Portuguese ref. 5001. It has a clean dial inspired by the original watches from the 1930s, an in-house movement with 7-day power reserve, and all the little details that make a modern IWC what it is. http://iwcblog.com/post/83713314040/going-gold-with-the-portuguese-5001

URWERK’s UR-105M is inspired by the Middle Ages, an era of lances, legends, chivalrous conduct and noble deeds. An era when knights in shining armor would risk their lives for honor and glory, with only their faith and shield for protection. The UR-105M embodies their gallant valor in a titanium and steel arena, the satellite hours conquering time in an eternal jousting tournament. - See more at: http://watchmobile7.com/articles/urwerk-ur-105m#sthash.OCRSLeb4.dpuf

While Baselworld 2014 was not a particularly big year for tourbillons, they were still an important element in the collections of most brands and a few of them were truly exceptional. Below are just five of the tourbillons that passed in front of my lens at Baselworld 2014. http://quillandpad.com/2014/04/19/give-me-five-tourbillons-from-baselworld-2014-part-1/

This year marks the 30th birthday of a staple in Breitling’s stable, the Chronomat. This version of the Breitling Chronomat started life in 1983 and was designed especially for the Italian airforce’s acrobatics team, the ‘Tricolori’. Since then the watch has become a reference point for aeronautical chronographs, and a masculine, utilitarian icon. http://timeandtidewatches.com/review-breitling-chronomat-airborne-live-pics/

Just two years ago, Patek Philippe introduced a new Ref. 5980/1A with a white dial (for laymen: that’s the Nautilus Chronograph). We at Monochrome watches were a bit surprised to discover, at Baselworld 2014, that Patek has already discontinued the steel 5980/1A model and replaced it with a steel Nautilus Chronograph with a second time zone, like the one in the Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5164. http://www.watchtime.com/blog/monochrome-monday-reviewing-the-new-patek-philippe-nautilus-travel-time-chronograph/

Urwerk has just revealed the second generation of its signature satellite hour display wristwatch, the UR-105M, which becomes the new entry level timepiece in Urwerk's line-up. With a thick steel plate screwed onto the front of the case, the new UR-105M has a strong resemblance to its bigger brother, the UR-210. http://www.watchesbysjx.com/2014/04/introducing-urwerk-ur-105m-armoured.html

Girard-Perregaux amazed everyone last year with its groundbreaking Constant Escapement model, it is for another form of high precision regulator that the brand is historically famous. Indeed, the quest for chronometric perfection with the use of what has become the symbol of Haute Horology, the tourbillon, has always been in the brand’s genes since the very first pieces developed by Constant Girard in the mid-nineteenth century. http://www.watch-agora.com/p/215

Although military watches are relatively new, they play an important role in the history of timekeeping. The first watches produced exclusively for military use began to appear in the late 1800’s. The German emperor Wilhelm I was one of the first to begin using military timepieces in large quantities when he ordered 1,000 watches in 1879 for the German Imperial Navy. By the early 1900’s, armies and navies around the world began to see the benefits of accurate timekeeping in the field, and soldiers were routinely issued a military wristwatch with their uniform. http://gevrilgroup.com/military-watches/

Baselworld is the ideal place to see rare and interesting pieces that you won't likely find at your local authorized dealer. One such piece that we really enjoyed is the new Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Gravity. Packing a considerable visual punch from an offset dial and fully exposed assortment, the Gravity offers a huge amount of charm and comes in two distinct versions showing two different expressions of a very cool design. http://www.ablogtowatch.com/maurice-lacroix-masterpiece-gravity-watch-hands/

Omega X-33 watch lovers will rejoice to know that for 2014, Omega is releasing a brand new version of the X-33 called the Speedmaster Skywalker X-33. You can now insert relevant Luke Skywalker and other related Star Wars references. This is an interesting move as just two years ago in 2012 Omega released what was supposed to be the modern X-33 with the Speedmaster Z-33 (reviewed here). Nevertheless, the cult favorite X-33 is back with a new and updated model. http://www.ablogtowatch.com/omega-speedmaster-skywalker-x-33-watch/

In 1929, the headlines of the London Daily Mail didn’t just suggest, they shouted: “The Wonder Watch, that Defies the Elements”. Yes, each word was capitalised, and yes, it was all true. The Rolex Oyster, buckled firmly to the wrist of English swimmer Mercedes Gleitze had indeed lasted the 10-hour open water swim of the English Channel “without injury”. The full-page advertisement went on to describe the “Triumph in Watch-making” that was achieved when the Mercedes’ toes touched the chalk rocks of the UK with a watch that, “after careful examination”, still kept perfect time and was untouched by corrosion and condensation. http://timeandtidewatches.com/depth-everything-ever-wanted-know-rolex-sea-fixated-daytona-ask/

Last week, Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiled a new collection that pays tribute to a timepiece originally produced in 1958 for scientists, explorers and adventurers — the Geophysic. The name Geophysic comes from International Geophysical Year, which was an international scientific project that lasted from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958. It marked the end of a long period during the Cold War when scientific interchange between East and West had been seriously interrupted. http://professionalwatches.com/2014/04/introducing-the-jaeger-lecoultre-geophysic-1958.html
