The dong son drum serves as the source of inspiration for Peter Speake-Marin’s latest release: the Diamond Magister Dong Son Tourbillon. The drum’s origins trace to the Red River Delta of Vietnam dating back to approximately 600 BC. The drums were typically used in harvest festivals and rituals such as weddings and funerals, as well as acting as symbols of status and power for tribal leaders.http://www.atimelyperspective.com/blog/2016/01/25/meet-the-diamond-magister-dong-son-tourbillon-from-peter-speake-marin.html

When mathematics meets watchmaking, the result is Montres DeWitt’s Academia Mathematical Concept Watch No. 4 – a complicated watch with no hands and a mysterious display. The fourth of a series of revolutionary concept watches developed by Swiss haute horlogerie brand DeWitt, the Academia Mathematical is a jumping hours and minutes complication like no other. Known for its inventive approach to watchmaking, the independent Geneva-based manufacture constantly seeks out original concepts like its timepieces containing Napoleon Bonaparte’s hair, its unusual jumping hours and its visually-striking moon phases.http://www.forbes.com/sites/yjeanmundelsalle/2016/01/13/swiss-watch-brand-dewitt-presents-the-academia-mathematical-with-no-hands-and-a-mysterious-display/?utm_campaign=ForbesLife&utm_source=TWITTER&utm_medium=social&linkId=20333890#1c15687c417f

With the Overseas line, and perhaps most so with the Overseas Chronograph, Vacheron Constantin has attempted to walk the fine line which often bisects watches: that between dressy and sporty. With a sport watch history that can be traced back to the '30s, Vacheron undoubtedly has the know how to produce a tough but classy watch, and the previous generations of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph stand in testament to that ability. After five years of movement development, Vacheron Constantin chose SIHH 2016 for the launch of their updated Overseas line, including the Overseas Chronograph and its new calibre 5200 movement.http://www.ablogtowatch.com/vacheron-constantin-overseas-chronograph-calibre-5200/

Debuted at SIHH 2016 is this new and truly awesome (in both price and design) aviation watch from Richard Mille designed in collaboration with Airbus' private jet division. ACJ stands for "Airbus Corporate Jets" and this arm of the French airplane company produces jetliners for usually 20-50 passengers for the ultra-wealthy, corporations, or even governments. ACJ chose to partner with Richard Mille, and this rather interesting Richard Mille RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph watch is the result.http://www.ablogtowatch.com/richard-mille-rm-50-02-acj-tourbillon-split-seconds-chronograph-watch-airbus/

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: it’s very unlikely that even EMC’s proud parents − Urwerk co-founders Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei − would describe their EMC progeny as “pretty.”http://quillandpad.com/2016/01/18/presenting-emc2-time-hunter-by-urwerk-ugly-duckling-takes-first-step-to-swanhood/

A couple years ago in 2014, Bulgari quietly introduced the Octo Finissimo collection that currently contains various versions of this "standard" Octo Finissimo and the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon (hands-on here) that remains the thinnest tourbillon watch in the world. The Octo Finissimo Tourbillon is clearly a very cool watch, but at over four times the price of this already lavish model, it exists in another product category altogether. "Standard" in this context is a relative term, as the Bulgari Octo Finissimo is still very much a high-end luxury watch coming in both an 18k pink gold case (ref. 102371 BGOP40BGLXT), as well as a model in platinum (ref. reference 102028 BGO40BPLXT).http://www.ablogtowatch.com/bulgari-octo-finissimo-watch/

Hublot is probably one of the least understood luxury brands around (particularly in the wrist watch realm) - especially because so many people think that they understand it. Hublot really epitomizes what someone recently described to me as a "non-fragile" company. The idea is that fragile companies are those that don't deal well with criticism or complaints. Non-fragile companies, on the other hand, actually thrive in the face of criticism and sometimes even controversy. Hublot receives more than its fair share of negative commentary from the wrist watch collector community, yet the brand seems to be getting stronger all the time. Hublot is a non-fragile company that thrives on feedback both negative and positive. No one at the frantic and busy organization is at all sensitive about the fact that many of the more conservative watch collectors take most opportunities to share their disapproval at the brand's product offerings. Hublot keeps on going strong offering more of what people seem to love, and also more of what seems to irritate some of the more outspoken members of the watch lover community.http://www.ablogtowatch.com/hublot-big-bang-unico-watch-review/

How you respond to the release of the Carl F. Bucherer Patravi TravelTec watch in black DLC will probably depend on your thoughts on the current options presented by the brand. Their choice to release a matte black DLC version of their Patravi TravelTec provides an interesting option to those who want something a little different from the stainless steel models and for those who, for whatever reason, don't want to get a gold version either. It's still edgy but also a more reserved (and affordable) alternative to the Patravi TravelTec GMT FourX (reviewed here), which is the skeletonized version.http://www.ablogtowatch.com/carl-f-bucherer-patravi-traveltec-black-watch/

Looking at the entries in the 2015 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, many of which had watch names seemingly longer than a feature article, I didn’t feel pressured to cut the title of this article short. But it really should have read: “Why we are in a golden age of appreciating fine hand-finishing. And why that will change relatively soon.”http://quillandpad.com/2015/10/27/why-we-are-in-a-golden-age-for-appreciating-superlative-hand-finishing-in-wristwatches/

Bearing the classic look of what most people associate with a Panerai dial, along with the simplicity of just two hands on the face indicating only the hours and minutes - for many watch lovers, this Panerai Radiomir Black Seal 8 Days watch (aka PAM610) represents one of the purest Panerai designs available. For that reason, I really like this particular watch that combines many desirable aesthetic traits along with a comfortable fit on the wrist. While it isn't very fancy compared to a lot of the company's other products, the Panerai Radiomir Black Seal 8 Days PAM610 watch offers a lot of what you should be looking for in a timepiece from the popular brand.http://www.ablogtowatch.com/panerai-radiomir-black-seal-8-days-pam610-watch-review/
