In this article we will examine an instrument that is so important that the life of its operator depends on it. The operator in question is a diver, submerging in a hostile environment either to make a living, or to hunt fish. No, it is not a big dive computer with a huge lcd screen that performs countless calculations per milisecond based on complex algorithms. http://monochrome-watches.com/omega-seamaster-automatic-120m-chronograph-ref-176-004-k-big-blue/

In recent years, common lines spoken by non-watch collectors or enthusiasts tend to resemble, “I don’t need a watch, I have my mobile phone to check the time,” or “The watch industry is dead, no one needs to wear a watch to tell the time.” While these comments seem true at face value, they don’t really account for the fact that the luxury watch segment continues to grow year over year.http://ourminutes.tourneau.com/pocket-watch-dead/

On a rare tour of Rolex’s movement-manufacturing complex in Bienne, Switzerland, WatchTime’s Joe Thompson and Norma Buchanan witnessed the making of the Cosmograph Daytona Caliber 4130. We reported on it in this feature from our March-April 2010 issue. The first thing that strikes you is its sheer size. The Rolex movement-making complex, on the outskirts of Bienne, Switzerland, is a study in gigantism. It consists of four monolithic buildings, occupying 170,000 cubic meters of space. It’s imposing, and, with its air of impregnability, a little mysterious.http://www.watchtime.com/featured/rolex-bienne/

What makes a watch worth a million dollars or more? In a new book, “The World’s Most Expensive Watches” (Antique Collectors Club, $95), Ariel Adams showcases 102 men’s watches that have sold for as much as $5 million. The watches range from historically important objects to decorative yet functional diamond-encrusted bracelets. Some have features like astronomical charts and perpetual calendars. What accounts for their appeal? “People are always trying to find perfection in life, and they can’t, but watches are finely tuned machines,” says Mr. Adams. “So they might think, ‘My life is hectic, and the world is crazy, but this machine is as close to perfection as you can imagine.’ http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-million-dollar-watch-1417033622?tesla=y
