The Luminor 1950 case was developed by Panerai in the late 1940s to be worn by commandos of the Italian Navy and is inspired by a model created in 1956 for the Egyptian Navy. From that came the Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 47 mm, a professional 300-meter divers watch, which until this year was only available in titanium. For 2015, Panerai introduced the same model in a new high-tech material called Carbotech. I recently had the chance to review this distinctive-looking watch. Read on for the results.http://www.watchtime.com/featured/hands-on-review-panerai-luminor-submersible-1950-carbotech-3-days-automatic-47mm/?utm_source=WatchTime+Daily+Update&utm_campaign=08ff657e75-WT+Daily&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8338768216-08ff657e75-14531153&mc_cid=08ff657e75&mc_eid=1436559a32

The default size today for Grand Seiko's more classic timepieces is somewhere between 38mm and 40mm wide in diameter. That isn't a bad size in general, but for some looking to wear the pieces more casually and with short sleeves, these sizes can be too small. Seiko is one of those brands that both listens to consumers and also makes their own decisions about product development, so it makes sense that 42mm-wide classically-designed Grand Seiko "dress" watches are now available in these larger diameters. http://www.ablogtowatch.com/grand-seiko-sbgr097-limited-edition-watch-42mm/

It is very unusual to look at a piece of such undeniable quality as the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pocket Time Instrument and find a number of more critical points sooner than anything else – but I guess this example is one that I will remember as proof that first impressions can be misleading... With the release of the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pocket Time Instrument, this Geneva-based manufacture has actually stepped up their game. At SIHH 2013, Roger Dubuis released the Quatuor (hands-on here), a watch with a weird name and a weirder (and amazing) movement: and so, in the past, it may have been arguable to suggest that Roger Dubuis was a hair more concerned with the aesthetic than the technical, but with such a halo-piece, the manufacture has proven beyond doubt that technical whimsies are very much a source of interest.http://www.ablogtowatch.com/roger-dubuis-excalibur-spider-pocket-time-instrument-pocket-watch/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Ablogtowatch+%28ABLOGTOWATCH%29

Steel is the most “dangerous” material in the luxury watch industry because it is so useful yet so common. Most luxury watches should actually be produced in steel, but watchmakers who produce the most high-end luxury goods typically eschew the “simple” material in favor of gold or other precious metals so that their products can command the highest prices. Steel is nevertheless a force to be reckoned with, and serious timepiece aficionados know this. For that reason, the limited edition of 38 sets of five “The Historic Size” watches from Geneva-based F.P. Journe is particularly interesting.http://www.forbes.com/sites/arieladams/2015/10/08/five-timepiece-set-from-f-p-journe-in-steel-priced-at-308000/

In the course of five short years, SevenFriday has created a seemingly unique reputation in the world of wristwatches. The P- Series (reviewed here) and M-Series (reviewed here) were seminal lines that, for lack of a better phrase, disrupted conventional thinking about "haute horology" and its reputation for exclusivity. The new SevenFriday V-Series clearly isn't up there with the finest in watchmaking in terms of quality and execution, but the brand seems absolutely committed to taking the "funky mechanics" part of that and tuning it down to a more accessible price point. This could (and does) result in a form-following-function decision due to the inclusion of the new “Fast Strap Change” (FSC) system which brought on the addition of two protrusions on the left side of the case. While we're on acronyms, it’s also got a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip that can be used to check the authenticity of the watch.http://www.ablogtowatch.com/sevenfriday-v-series-watch-review/

One of the stand out moments of the grand opening of Hublot’s new manufacturing building came when the brand’s Chairman, Jean-Claude Biver, claimed the success of the brand was down to a watch that does not tell the time. Harry Winston has recently announced another chapter in their Histoire de Tourbillon line, the Harry Winston Histoire De Tourbillon 6. It is traditionally one of the most complicated watches, but released with the least amount of usable illustrations - you guessed it: one front view. To sum it all up real quick: a triple-axis tourbillon, a separate karussel, 683 parts, two time indications, resetting hands on the second indication, carriage stop on the karussel, over 80 hours of power reserve, and a monstrous 55-millimeter case. Take all that into account, and you will see why it baffles me why such halo pieces – because, after all, such releases are the epitome of halo releases – are debuted with just a single front view of the watch. Illustration-rant over, we can move on to similarly mind-boggling, albeit much more interesting issues now – of the mechanical kind!http://www.ablogtowatch.com/harry-winston-histoire-de-tourbillon-6-watch/

As we begin this new series — in which we look at modern-day versions of classic watch models through the eyes of a vintage-watch fan — I think back to all the iconic watches that have achieved their “classic” status through either revolutionary design or historical impact; what I am beginning to theorize is that to truly reach the level of “classic,” a watch must have both. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is one of these pieces, and its success is a testament to not only the innovation AP put forth in the 1970s, but also to the continuing homage the brand plays to Gérald Genta’s original design. Today, there are 56 variations of the Royal Oak, and 81 if you also include (and I will offer reasons why I believe you should not) the Royal Oak Offshore collection. All of this culminates into a signature watch that has survived more than 40 years, and continues to define the Audemars Piguet brand.http://www.watchtime.com/featured/vintage-eye-for-the-modern-guy-part-1-audemars-piguet-royal-oak/?utm_source=WatchTime+Daily+Update&utm_campaign=1b5d72afae-WT+Daily&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8338768216-1b5d72afae-14531153&mc_cid=1b5d72afae&mc_eid=1436559a32

Few watches possess the aura and the character of the Seiko Tuna. Introduced in 1975 in a mechanical form, it was upgraded in 1978 with a quartz movement, after a Japanese saturation diver sent a letter of complaint. The Tuna, or Tuna-can as watch aficionados’ call it, is a watch that carries no compromises. It’s either love or hate. There are countless posts on Internet about it – and some where people seem to misunderstand its importance and to discard it as an ugly watch. Many however manage to explain its main purpose and its significance seem to become hooked. I belong to the second category and I decided to take my own Seiko Tuna with me, during my summer vacations, for an in-depth review – but that’s going to be the second part of this article. First, we must look back in the past and have a closer look at the history of the Seiko Tuna Prospex (Professional specifications).https://monochrome-watches.com/history-seiko-tuna-dive-watch/

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Jaeger-LeCoultre is a real "watch lovers' brand." Here is a super thin mechanical watch that also happens to have diamond decoration and a lot of hand-engraving on the skeletonized movement... surrounded by a ring of grand feu enamel painting. Oris went into its archives and resurrected a dive watch from 50 years ago, unveiling it in March at this year’s Baselworld watch fair in March. The Oris Diver Sixty-Five (click here to read about it, along with other vintage-inspired watches launched at the fair) is a great example of a watch company making a heritage piece the right way: it looks very much like the original but in a larger, contemporary-sized case made of stainless steel; a unidirectional bezel; a modern, automatic mechanical movement; a rubber strap; and a sapphire crystal. By contrast, the original model was smaller, came in a chromium-plated brass case with a plexiglas crystal (with no anti-glare treatment), a bi-directional rotating bezel, and on a versatile black plastic strap.http://www.watchtime.com/reviews/hands-on-review-oris-diver-sixty-five/?utm_source=WatchTime+Daily+Update&utm_campaign=3eeced8703-WT+Daily&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8338768216-3eeced8703-14531153&mc_cid=3eeced8703&mc_eid=1436559a32

More often than not, brands define their product DNA, ensuring every item that rolls off the production line is unmistakably theirs – but some brands aren't so easy to pigeon-hole. Some brands like so much to be different and that difference becomes their modus vivendi. The new ArtyA & Kerbedanz Led Zeppelin watch is a typically unpredictable offering from the originative mind of Yvan Arpa, owner and creative director of ArtyA. The ArtyA & Kerbedanz Led Zeppelin is, like his previous models, quite unlike anything else. His range is bound by a common uncommonness. ArtyA is nowhere near as erratic as a brand like Azimuth, for example, but I wouldn't fancy betting on what will come next – I will wager, though, that it'll be worth a look!http://www.ablogtowatch.com/artya-kerbedanz-led-zeppelin-watch-collaboration/

OK, I will admit that this Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Minute Repeater watch doesn't really need to have a small protruding plaque on the dial that informs the wearer of the "Sonnerie" element of the movement. (SEE UPDATE BELOW). In person, this feature really isn't terribly distracting, but I don't know that it is very important. I bring this up now because it is really one of the only obvious downsides to this otherwise amazingly wearable high-complication watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre. New watches are being released all the time.
