The first pilot’s watch was created in 1904, when Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont explained to his friend Louis Cartier that it was difficult to fly and read a pocket watch at the same time. Cartier’s solution became one of the cornerstones of its timepiece business: the Santos wristwatch. But the style truly took off in the 1940s, when companies like A. Lange & Sühne, IWC, Omega and Zenith added pilot’s watches to their roster. http://www.forbes.com/sites/hannahelliott/2014/09/10/flight-time-the-rise-of-the-pilots-watch/
