By now, who doesn’t know the history of the OMEGA Speedmaster, perhaps the most famous and iconic chronograph, if not watch, in the world? But that Speedmaster that everyone knows as the Moonwatch started off as an automotive watch, built and named to capitalize on the growing interest in not only sports watches but sports cars in the late 1950s. Yes, the Speedmaster began life in 1957 in slightly different guise than the rugged, sober tool of Aldrin, Shepard and Grissom. The first version had more delicate hands, lacked the crown guards of the later versions and featured an engraved steel bezel rather than the black aluminum insert so commonly pictured on the Moonwatch.
